If you thought Greece was all about the islands, think again. Halkidiki is the place to be on the mainland, a beautiful region in the north of the country defined by rugged hills, sweeping pine forests and picture perfect beaches. It’s a great destination for a summer family holiday, with some lovely resorts and a host of active pursuits, including hiking, mountain biking and diving. The region is also rich in history, and the bountiful countryside produces some of Greece’s best wine, honey and olive oil.
Halkidiki has three peninsulas, or ‘legs’, stretching out into the Aegean, each with its own distinct character. Kassandra is the most developed, and its white sand beaches are the most easily accessible from the airport at Thessaloniki, making it popular with families. The Sithonia peninsula is quieter, with a craggy coastline of secluded coves, while Athos is almost entirely given over to the closed monastic community of Mount Athos. Thessaloniki itself is also well worth a visit, a cosmopolitan city that is second only to Athens in its size and importance.
Halkidiki’s beaches have long been frequented by Greek holidaymakers, but the secret is now out and it’s an increasingly popular choice for luxury travellers from other parts of Europe. You’ll find inviting tavernas serving mouth-wateringly fresh seafood along every beach and cove, and the region is scattered with picturesque villages, crumbling Byzantine towers and beautiful Orthodox monasteries. Hiring a car is a great option if you want to get out and explore, and allows you to visit some of the region’s quieter corners and more remote beaches.
