Skiathos is one of the greenest of all the Greek islands, with its undulating hills of olive trees and pine forest, though it’s the wonderful beaches that are the biggest draw. There are more than 60 to enjoy, from the famous golden sands of Koukounaries to the bouncing beach bars of Big Banana and the dramatic cliffs of Lalaria, only accessible by boat.
Skiathos Town is the main settlement on the island, with its cobbled streets, inviting tavernas and whitewashed houses draped in bougainvillea. If you’re looking for a laid back, low key beach holiday then Skiathos is the perfect choice, though tear yourself away from your sun lounger and you’ll find monasteries, churches and Venetian ruins scattered around the island, along with more than a hundred miles of hiking trails.
Many of the beaches are set up for watersports and diving, and you can also explore the island by mountain bike or on horseback. Skiathos has good ferry connections with the other Sporades islands, including pretty Skopelos and rugged Alonissos.
